Why we only glaze the inside

A short note on the Everyday Bowls, and the decision that makes them feel the way they do in the hand.

Pick up an Everyday Bowl and the first thing you feel is the rim. It is raw stoneware, sanded smooth but unglazed, slightly warm, slightly matte. Inside, the ash glaze is glossy and food-safe. The contrast is the whole design.

Leaving the outside raw does three things. It keeps the bowls from sliding on a table. It lets them stack without the glaze-on-glaze clink. And it means they darken very slightly over years of hands, which we like, and which a fully glazed bowl can never do.

“Glaze where the food is. Clay where the hand is.”

Ana Ribeiro, Oficina Ribeiro

The bowls are fired at 1260 °C, so the raw body is fully vitrified and will not absorb water or stain. Dishwasher, oven, freezer — all fine. Just do not expect them to stay pale forever. That is the point.
