The house is one long room with a staircase at the end. Concrete floor, concrete stair, lime-washed walls, one window the width of the building. The owners moved in with almost nothing and have added slowly ever since.
What interested us was how differently our pieces behave here. The Arc chair, which reads as sculptural in a furnished room, reads as quiet in this one. The Line lamp becomes the only vertical in a horizontal space. The room asks the objects to carry it, and they can, because there are so few of them.
Restraint as a material
We talk a lot about oak and clay and linen. We talk less about the material that makes all of them legible: the empty space around them. This house is the clearest argument we have seen for treating that space as something you design, not something left over.
